Description
Approved by the FDA in June 2006, Juvederm ™ is a non-surgical, injectable gel used to restore the skin’s volume and provide correction of wrinkles and nasolabial folds. From the creators of Botox ® Cosmetic, Juvederm ™ is considered a “next generation” injectable; it is a dermal filler made of a smooth consistency gel that is composed of cross-linked hyaluronic acid.
Length
Approximately 15 minutes, depending upon number of injections required to correct the target areas.
Side Effects
Redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. Most reactions will subside in seven days or less.
Recovery
Immediate results; little to no downtime.
Risks
There is a small risk of infection (as with any injection procedure). Because of the biocompatibility of hyaluronic acid, Juvederm ™ carries little risk of allergic reaction.
Results
Juvederm ™ has shown to maintain corrective results for an average of six months. Some patients have experienced a longer-lasting effect. Additional injections and touch-ups may be requested to achieve optimal correction. Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance, it will gradually absorb into the body.
Technology
Juvederm ™ is offered in two formulations: Juvederm ™ Ultra (for areas where subtle volume enhancement is required) and Juvederm ™ Ultra Plus (for correction of severely deep folds and wrinkles). Once you and your health care professional identify the areas targeted for correction, he/she will ease Juvederm ™ into the injection sites at the mid to deep dermis (beneath the surface of the skin). Other approved hyaluronic acid treatments are granular in nature, but the smooth consistency of Juvederm ™ allows the injection to be administered with relative ease.
