Breast Asymmetry Correction Surgery

Description

Treatment for breast asymmetry is usually to correct a difference in size, shape, or nipple position, best performed on women who have completed puberty so no further breast development is expected.

Length

1 to 3 hours.

Side Effects

Mild to moderate discomfort, tightness, swelling, and decreased arm movement.

Recovery

Back to work: 1 to 2 weeks.

Risks

Visible implant rippling, loss of nipple sensation, persistent asymmetry, implant rupture or shifting, infection, hematoma, and capsular contracture (internal scar tissue).

Results

Reduced size may be permanent or may increase in size with weight gain or hormone changes. Implants may require revision within 5 to 10 years.

Technology

A surgeon can increase the smaller breast with an implant, reduce the larger breast, or use two different-sized implants. Breast asymmetry is an individualized procedure, with various possibilities of incision placement; around the areola, under the fold of the breast, in the armpit, or in the navel.
