What are the main causes of enlarged male breasts?

Excessive drinking and/or the use of certain drugs may be the cause of gynecomastia. Hormonal changes and heredity conditions are also known to create the appearance of "female-like breasts."

What happens during gynecomastia correction surgery?

During gynecomastia correction surgery, or male breast reduction, excess fat and tissue are cut away from the breast. If needed, liposuction is also performed on the area.

Am I an eligible candidate?

An ideal candidate for gynecomastia treatment may be described as a male who is physically and psychologically healthy, aware of the risks and complications that may arise due to the procedure, seeking improvement rather than perfection, and at least 18 years of age.

How much does gynecomastia surgery cost?

According the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2007 the national average gynecomastia surgery cost was $3,455. This price represents physician/surgeon fees only and does not account for the surgical facility, anesthesia, and other costs.

Are the results of gynecomastia surgery long-lasting?

Gynecomastia results are permanent; however, weight gain and/or the use of certain drugs may cause the condition to reoccur.

How long is the gynecomastia recovery time and what will I have to be responsible for during that time?

Following surgery, you will be advised to rest for three to seven days before returning to work. Most strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks. You will be responsible for following your plastic surgeon's surgical instructions. Failing to do so may result in various complications.

What are the risks and side effects of gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia risks and side effects include reaction to the type of anesthetic used, excessive fluid loss, pigmentation changes, decreased sensation of the breasts and nipples, rippling of the skin, pigment changes, and extensive scarring.

How is liposuction used for gynecomastia surgery?

If a patient has an excessive amount of fat cells present in their breasts, a doctor may use liposuction to remove it. This will help to provide a flatter chest.

After liposuction for gynecomastia, how soon can I go back to work or my exercise routine?

Three to seven days after gynecomastia surgery a patient will be able to return to work. Mild activities are acceptable a few days following the procedure, but more strenuous actions should be avoided for a several weeks.

Will general anesthesia or sedation be used? What about stitches or sutures?

Both general anesthesia and sedation may be used during male breast reduction, but this is up to you and your surgeon to decide upon. Stitches used also depend on your doctor's preference. Some prefer to take them out a few days after surgery, while others use dissolvable sutures.
