Breast Implant Revision FAQ
What is breast implant revision?
Breast implant revision is a procedure designed to correct complications from a previous primary breast augmentation procedure, which has created a cosmetic problem and/or poses a health risk. This procedure commonly involves the removal and/or replacement of saline or silicone breast implants.
Is this procedure right for me?
If you find yourself dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, or if you are experiencing pain or discomfort due to complications from your initial breast augmentation surgery, this procedure may be right for you. Some women choose to have their implants replaced, while some will simply opt for removal, depending on their individual needs.
What sort of problems can breast implant revision correct?
Some of the problems that this surgery can correct include capsular contracture, improper implant placement, implant rupture or leakage, implant wrinkling, or an unnatural appearance. Older silicone implants should be inspected by a surgeon to see whether or not they should be replaced due to age.
How is breast implant revision performed?
For implant removal and/or replacement, your surgeon will make incisions in either the crease below the breast, around the areola, in the armpit, or possibly through the navel. This procedure is performed with great precision and delicacy, in order to help prevent the patient from needing a secondary revision. Your surgeon will determine the best course of treatment for you following the preliminary exam.
How long does this plastic surgery procedure take?
This procedure will usually take anywhere from one to three hours, although the length of time can vary due to circumstances such as your anatomy, technique used, and the types of complications you have endured.
How long will the results of breast implant revision surgery last?
Breast implant revision results are long-lasting; however, you may want to periodically visit your doctor to make sure that your implants are not posing health risks, and to help prevent any further complications.
What are some of the possible risks/complications of breast implant revision?
All surgery carries the possibility of complications such as infection, unsatisfactory results, excessive bleeding, and adverse reaction to anesthesia. As with an initial breast augmentation, the risks of this specific procedure include possibility of hematoma, capsular contracture, nipple sensitivity or loss in sensitivity, rippling, rupturing, and leakage.
Who is an ideal candidate for breast implant revision?
In addition to possessing complications and problems associated with a previous breast augmentation procedure, the best candidates for this procedure are women 18 years of age or older, are in good physical health, psychologically stable, have realistic expectations, looking for improvement not perfection, and are not currently pregnant or nursing.
How much does breast implant revision cost?
Breast implant revision can typically cost anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000. However, these numbers do not factor in any other fees, such as any additional hospital fees or anesthesiologist fees. Cost can also vary due to the geographic location of your surgeon. Typically insurance companies will not cover cosmetic procedures, but this surgery may be covered in certain cases.
What should I expect during my recovery period?
You may need help for the first few days of your recovery due to the effects of medication and/or limited mobility. Your breasts will be bandaged for protection and support, and you may have drainage tubes for a few days to help with any excess fluid. It is important to rest during your recovery period, and take all medications prescribed by your physician. When your bandages are removed, you may have to wear a support garment. Stitches may be removed within 10 days, with swelling subsiding over the weeks following your procedure.
